Police hope speed-monitoring device will curb car accidents

On behalf of Terence Gross of Gross & Schuster, P.A. posted in Car Accidents on Thursday, May 5, 2011.

It is a parent’s worst nightmare to see their child die in an accident. Unfortunately, a teenage mother in Pensacola lost her toddler to a car accident on April 21. Now, Pensacola police are hoping to curb accidents in the area with the help of a speed-monitoring device.

On the day of the accident, the woman was walking with her younger sister, pushing a double stroller that held her daughter and another toddler. They were apparently crossing Fairfield Drive and were standing in a yellow area near Hart Drive when they were struck by a truck driven by a 78-year-old man. The toddler died a day before her first birthday.

The yellow area of the road is apparently not meant to be used by drivers or pedestrians.

Even though police say speed was not a factor in the accident, they put up the monitoring device at Fairfield Drive and Fairfax Drive. According to the Pensacola News Journal, the Pensacola police chief, Chip Simmons, says police frequently put up a speed-monitoring device after serious accidents.

It is an area known for speeding drivers. Residents who live nearby have reportedly complained of speeding traffic along the stretch of East Fairfield Drive. The posted speed limit is 35 m.p.h., but many motorists apparently drive faster than that.

Police say they have additional plans to enforce the speed limit in the area with the hope of reducing accidents. Any measure to encourage motorists to slow down and drive carefully will be beneficial to everyone.
