The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale to classify hurricanes into five categories based on their maximum sustained wind speed. These ratings help convey a storm’s overall severity and the potential level of wind damage.

However, wind speed does not tell the whole story. The scale does not account for other dangerous hurricane impacts, such as storm surge, rainfall, flooding, tornadoes, wave height, forward speed, or storm size. Even with those limitations, the Saffir-Simpson scale remains a useful tool for helping the public quickly understand how severe a hurricane may be.

Keep reading to learn more about the five categories of hurricanes, as well as other impacts this measurement might leave out.

Category One

A Category 1 hurricane has wind speeds of 74 to 95 miles per hour. These winds can remove roof tiles and siding from homes. They may break tree branches and damage power lines. Although weak or young trees may be uprooted, established trees should be fine. Power outages may occur, but should only last a few days.

Category Two

A Category 2 hurricane’s winds can reach 96 to 110 miles per hour. The storm can damage roofs and siding. Trees with shallow roots may be blown over. Between tree and wind damage, power lines may snap, resulting in power outages lasting several days to weeks.

Category Three

The winds in a Category 3 can reach 111 to 129 miles per hour. Category 3 through 5 hurricanes are also considered major hurricanes.

At these speeds, the wind can damage a roof’s surface and ends. Trees may be blown over, regardless of their age or strength. Electric poles and lines will likely sustain damage, resulting in lengthy power outages. Flooding may overwhelm water systems, jeopardizing water supplies.

Category Four

Category 4 hurricane winds can reach 130 to 156 miles per hour. Homes will very likely sustain damage to the roof and exterior wall framing, resulting in catastrophic losses. Trees and electrical poles will be downed, and water delivery will be cut off. The area may be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

Category Five

A Category 5 hurricane has winds of 157 miles per hour or higher. Houses may be leveled, and fallen trees and power poles will knock out power and block roads. Without water or electricity, residents may be unable to return to the area for weeks or months.

Additional Impacts from Hurricanes

In addition to property damage, hurricanes can cause widespread harm that may not be captured by simply measuring maximum sustained wind speed.

Blowing debris, rising floodwaters, storm surge, and collapsing homes can injure or kill people caught in the storm. Wet, muddy, and debris-covered surfaces can also cause trip or slip and fall accidents, especially in damaged buildings, parking lots, sidewalks, and evacuation areas.

Car accidents can result from high winds, heavy rain, low visibility, slick roads, and flooded streets. Powerful storms can also amplify driving mistakes that might result from stress, poor visibility, or inattention. Trucks are particularly vulnerable in hurricanes. High winds can blow semi-trucks over, causing truck accidents that block roads and spill much-needed supplies.

Hurricanes can also trigger tornadoes, flash floods, mudslides, fires, and structural collapses. Drownings, blunt-force injuries, crush injuries, and electrocution can result. Additionally, fallen electric lines, exposed wiring, gas leaks, and standing water can pose fire or electrocution risks to bystanders, first responders, and people returning to damaged areas after the storm.

Hurricanes are categorized on a five-point scale. A hurricane rating can predict the property damage and injuries a storm can cause. When the damage and injuries are caused or amplified by human negligence, those who sustained losses might have a legal claim against the at-fault party.
